The CJ5 story. When I bought this Jeep back in 1989 it was the bomb! I took it mudding, trail riding and even river crossing every chance I got. I had years of fun with minimal problems. In 1990 I bought a new soft top and a bikini top. In 1991 I broke one of the hub snap rings resulting in a three wheel drive Jeep. A simple upgrade to Superwinch hubs solved that minor problem. 1994 the engine froze up on me at 65 m.p.h. (Fun, bonus, pre-cellphone days). A lucky trip to a local salvage yard found me a stash of three "still in the crate" engines they purchased when our local Chrysler plant closed. Guess what that started. A complete tear down. Fiberglass body professionally painted. A suspension lift and new 33" tires. Just to name a few.

Now the Jeep was too clean and new to play hard. A few years later I bought a new toy. A 1979 Ford truck with 46" mudders. The Jeep got parked in the garage. Then in 1999 I bought a brand new Dodge Dakota truck. Eventually I got back to the Jeeps. However it was not until 2005 that poor Jeep saw the road again. By then the underside no longer looked restored. It is amazing how harsh time is to a vehicle, even when kept in a garage. I had forgotten how an older Jeep drives. You know, manual steering and manual brakes. In summer of 2005 and 2006 that Jeep got to enjoy cruising around with the top off. in 2007 the Jeep did not pass the Wisconsin emissions test and to be honest, I am too lazy to tune it up just to make "the man" happy.
